Alumni Scholars Program

The Robert Momsen Scholarship Fund of the Lucas County Alumni Club

The scholarship was established November 5, 1993, by the Lucas County Alumni Club. Eighty percent of the income provides financial aid to student from Lucas County, Ohio. The remaining twenty percent is added to the principal. It began with $15,342 and has grown through donations, contributions, and club activities. Currently the principal balance is $200,920 Thanks to everyone for your generous support.  Each year the OSUACLC awards 80% of the interest  in our scholarship fund. Several students  from Lucas County receive some financial assistance for their first year's studies. It is our goal to continue growing the scholarship fund so that one day we will award our first full-ride scholarship! Our endowment has generated over $20,000 in grants to students over the past 4 years. Please help us "Pay Forward" and make a donation to the Robert Momsen Scholarship Fund.

Who wasRobert Momsen?

We lost our dear friend on May 25, 2010.  Please read more about him on our home page.

Robert Momsen was inducted into the OSU Hall of Fame in 2005 during the halftime of the OSU/San Diego State football game on September 17. He played in the famous "snow bowl" in 1950 against Michigan, which was the greatest game of his life, even though the Buckeyes lost 9-3. The game was played in a blizzard with all the scoring the result of blocked punt in the first quarter, which led to a field goal by Janowicz. Michigan countered and blocked a punt by Janowicz. OSU led 3-2 after the first quarter and Momsen said everyone thought that he had 20-20 vision at the time. He's now legally blind, but said his sight now is better than his vision was on that exceptionally cold and blizzardly Saturday in 1950. Momsen said the thing that had the biggest impact on him during his Ohio State career was the loyalty OSU alumni have toward their alma mater. Not many people are more loyal than Bob Momsen. He has served as the president of the Lucas County Alumni Club and currently is on our board and attends whenever he can. He is a 1947 graduate of Libbey High School. After his graduation from OSU, Momsen was recruited by the Detroit Lions and played several years for them. He was then traded to the San Francisco 49ers, where he played two years and realized he could make more money teaching and coaching. Legendary great, Woody Hayes helped get Momsen his first coaching position at Northland College. Momsen returned to Toledo in 1956, and he coached at Libbey, Waite, and Macomber before retiring in 1980.
