He was one of our fine scholarship winners that year. Jake ranked #1 in his class of 144 young men. He certainly had to be a very organized person to fit in everything he was involved in. Jake competed in both football and baseball in addition to qualifying AP Scholar with Honor along with the highest GPA-Valdictorian. To keep life interesting for this guy he worked at times at Toledo Hospital in the Dietary Department about 20 hours a week. I will tell you he kept his calendar filled with a variety of projects all through high school. We sure know how to select great kids! Jake wasted little time once he arrived at the Ohio State campus. He had a double major in Accounting and Finance. As you might guess Jake loves competing in sports which he did on the intramural level in flag football, basketball, tennis, ice hockey and softball. I might add that Ohio State has the largest intramural program in the country! Mr. Beham volunteered with Wonders of the World, helping elementary school children learn science through experiments. With this young man's energy you would not be surprised to hear there were other adventures like the Buckeye Capital Investors Investment Club and Pi Sigma Epsilon Business Fraternity. Jake joined Fisher Futures whose aim it is to get Buckeyes to Wall Street. Interning in Toledo at Toledo Fleet Solutions (accounting) as well as Health Care Reit (finance). In addition Jake got some experience at Lehman Brothers in New York. Of course Jake pointed out that he attended many Ohio State football and basketball games. Graduation came too early in December, 2008. He's now working for Pali Capital, a broker dealer firm in New York City where he's in a rotational analyst program jumping around to investment banking, sales, and research just to name a few areas. He's living and loving life in Manhattan in the financial district. Best of luck, Jake. You are a sharp young Buckeye businessman with rockets propelling you. You certainly have a happy heart. Andrew Screptock played varsity baseball and varsity soccer 4 years at Springfield High School. He was captain of both teams. He played trumpet in the marching band his freshman year, then he led the band as field commander for the remaining three years. At various points Andrew was the student body president, the student rep on the board of education, and the prom king. As a senior Andrew was selected to march in the Rose Bowl parade with the Band of America. (I believe Texas beat M*ch*g*n that year) He worked at Tim Horton's and National Amusements Theaters during high school Andrew is a 2005 graduate of Springfield High School. Andrew tried out for The Ohio State University Marching Band his freshman year, playing the baritone horn. He made the band (M row) and has played all four years. His last two years Andrew was the squad leader for M row. Andrew is undefeated against M*ch*g*n. Andrew is a member of the Phi Mu Alpha national music fraternity and Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honorary fraternity. He was a volunteer peer leader for kindergarten children in the Columbus City School System. He held down several part-time jobs including bank teller, OSU dorm room painter, OSU campus security database programmer, OSU fund raiser, Kroger bagger/stocker, and Max & Erma's host. Andrew graduated (cum laude) this spring with a BA in Humanities, with a major in Integrated Social Studies and a minor in Geography. Andrew is currently pursuing his Master's degree in Education with the University of Southern California. Yes, it's true. He is also, at the request of Dr. Jon Woods, student leader of the summer sessions for the OSUMB this summer. He will continue on with the band for his fifth and final year (third year as squad leader), albeit as a part-time student. (There go my game tickets!). Fun Fact: On September 12, Andrew will take the field against USC while enrolled as a full-time student at USC! Andrew plans to teach history at the middle school level and eventually get into administration. Go Bucks. Dave Screptock, Andrew's father Stacy Hoenig graduated on June 14, 2009 from The Ohio State University with a BA degree in German and a minor in International Studies from the College of Humanities. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors in the Arts and Sciences, and with Research Distinction in German. Stacy had a GPA of 3.98. Stacy began her studies in architecture but switched to German during her sophomore year. She traveled to London during her freshman year with her architecture class. Stacy went on a short-term mission trip for 6 weeks to Ghana, Africa between her sophomore and junior years. While a junior at Ohio State, she studied abroad at the University of Bonn in Bonn, Germany for a semester. She then stayed an extra few weeks for an internship with the University of Bonn, helping the newly arriving international students adjust to their new life in Germany. She is quite fluent in German, to the point where families in Germany could not tell who was the American student and who was the German citizen when she and a friend made home visits. During Stacy’s senior year she received a grant from the university to travel abroad and research her honors project. Her thesis is entitled: “Missionary “ Redefined: German Mission Work in 21st-Century East Africa”. Stacy stayed in Kenya, Africa for 3 weeks, researching at a German eye clinic. She then traveled by bus to Tanzania, Africa and lived with a German missionary family for an additional 3 weeks. Her project won third place in the humanities category at this year’s Denman Undergraduate Research Forum at Ohio State. Stacy has already started graduate school at The Ohio State University, pursuing a Master’s Degree in education. She graduated from Ohio State with no debt thanks to scholarships, part-time work, and being frugal! I think that this is a remarkable feat in itself. Stacy is engaged to Adam Johns from Norwalk, Ohio, a graduate of Ohio State and a junior high school math teacher. They are planning for a wedding in December. Thank you so much for your help and the scholarship which you gave Stacey to help her get started at Ohio State. Sincerely, Cindy Hoenig, Stacy’s mom Dear Lucas County Alumni Club, Hi there! Just wanted to check in and say “hi” and thank you again for your generous scholarship! It has greatly helped me this year and I am having the time of my life down here at Ohio State! If I didn’t know before why every member of the alumni club loves Ohio State so much, I do now. Ever since I moved in I have been in love with this campus and the people on it. Sorry I haven’t kept in better contact with you, but I can’t say I’ve had much free time this year. Right now I’m down in Columbus working as an office assistant in my dorm. Besides finding this great job down here, in the fall I became part of the All-Girl Cheer Team, Block “O” and pre-pharmacy club. Then in the winter I rushed Alpha Gamma Delta and will be initiated in the spring. Most recently I was selected as an Honors Ambassador, helping with honors events for prospective students. I am also in the second round of the selection process to be a Resident Advisor for next school year, which I am very excited about! I would have to say that my favorite memory of this year so far, besides amazing block “O” seats for football, rushing the field after beating Michigan, meeting my new best friends, experiencing the first spring day on the oval, having two sets of finals over (whew!), experiencing election night here, mirror lake jump…(can you believe there’s more? of course you can!). Besides all of the amazing things I have experienced this year, my favorite was down in Atlanta, Georgia for a cheerleading competition. Everywhere we went little girls, dads, whole families, alumni, everywhere we went people shouting O-H! or asking to get a picture with our team. I was so proud to walk around in an Ohio State uniform and feel like no matter where I went I could find people who knew and loved my school. It was truly the neatest experience and I can’t wait to see if the same happens again when we head to Daytona Beach in two weeks for nationals. I should probably stop here, you know as well as I do that once you start talking about this amazing, it’s pretty hard to stop. I just wanted to let you know that I am doing great, getting good grades and am very thankful for your support. I’m excited for spring quarter to begin and life here to start booming again. I hope that I can stay in contact until it is time for me to join the club! Tell this years’ scholarship winners congratulations for me! Thank you again and God bless! Chelsea Schultz Stephanie Marie Ray, proudly born September 19, 1983 to Karen and Guy Ray headlines our incredible list of OSUACLC scholarship recipients. Karen remarked that Stephanie was born "on the move". Mom know early on that her daughter was going to be very determined. Stephanie has a younger brother, Matt, who is a recent University of Toledo grad. Mom indicated the older sister enjoyed "guiding" little brother. She became an OSU fan early following her dad's favorite team, The Buckeyes. When Stephanie began her search for the right college Ohio State's Exercise Science Department became very attractive. Toledo's Medical School was an option, but today she wouldn't trade her Columbus experience for anything. In addition to being an excellent student, Steph excelled in track and field. Her accomplishments competing primarily in the 800 meters got Ohio State's attention. She still holds 2 records at her high school, Sylvania Northview. Once on a visit to Ohio State as a small fry with her family, she had an opportunity to run on the old track before the stadium was renovated. She exclaimed, "I'm going to run track here some day." In addition to our club scholarship, Ohio State awarded her a merit based scholarship for superior accomplishments in the classroom. After competing for two years at OSU, she turned her full attention to education, though she'll always cherish that time competing for the Buckeyes. Stephanie was an Academic All American. Stephanie now proudly displays her Doctor of Physical Therapy designation after achieving her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science. Steph had read and learned a great deal about Gary Gray. Gray founded Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers of which there are 7 locations. Dr. Ray is currently perfecting her trade at their center in Hillsdale, Michigan. She's living in the family summer home on Devil's Lake. She enjoys her routine of working out and running around the lake daily. I guess the cold energizes her. The OSUACLC thanks Doctor Ray for "paying forward" as she volunteers when possible at our golf outing and other events. We are extremely proud of all her accomplishments. Our judges obviously knew we had found a star when we chose her as one of our scholarship recipients. This is a Great Buckeye!
Our next monthly board meeting will be held at the February 9, 2010 at noon. Meetings are held at Roemer Insurance. Contact us for more information.. We have established our club "watering hole", it is Dale's Bar and Grill. It is located at 322 E. Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio. See you there to cheer our Buckeyes on to victory.
